What Are Decimal Hours?

Decimal hours are a way of writing time as a single number of hours. Instead of saying 7 hours and 45 minutes, payroll and billing systems often write 7.75 hours. The conversion is simple: divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the whole hours.

How to Convert Minutes to Decimal Hours

  1. Write down the whole number of hours.
  2. Divide the minutes by 60.
  3. Add the two numbers together.

Example: 7 hours and 30 minutes = 7 + (30 ÷ 60) = 7.50 hours.

Common Decimal Hour Examples

  • 15 minutes = 0.25 hours
  • 20 minutes = 0.33 hours
  • 30 minutes = 0.50 hours
  • 45 minutes = 0.75 hours
  • 7:30 = 7.50 hours
  • 8:05 = 8.08 hours

Why 7:30 Is Not 7.30 Hours

Clock time and decimal time look similar but use different scales. The number after the colon in 7:30 is minutes out of 60, while the digits after the decimal point in 7.30 are hundredths of an hour. Because 30 minutes is half an hour, 7:30 equals 7.50 hours, not 7.30. Using the wrong value can underpay employees or overbill clients.
